A “Tanner Box” (“Tanner” is a name given to our old “Sixpence” coin from pre-decimal days) in Yew. I made this as a Birthday Present for my Wife. It stands about 4 inches (10 cm) tall. I love turning Yew, it’s such a beautiful wood to work with. I am a relatively NEW Turner who, at the time of making this piece, had been turning for only 7 Weeks.

Your wife will love this. That is a nice turning. The wood is excellent.

Thanks James! The old pre-decimal Sixpence coin is said to be a “lucky Sixpence”, a thing from when they used to put them inside Christmas Puddings many years back. These have become a “Signature Piece” of mine, hence the name “Tanner Turnings”, as in the north of England (where I was born) a Sixpence was called a “Tanner”. If I make these for a certain person, I put one from the year they were born.
