Over the weekend I attended a class at Hancock Shaker Village. I live between 3 of the largest Shaker settlements Mt Lebanon, Hancock and Watervliet so the influence is certainly here all around me. The class was taught by Steve Grasselli who learned from John Wilson. Steve worked for Stickley Furniture for a number of years and was a great instructor. The boxes are crude at best but I had fun.

Later I can post pics of the workshops at the Village that I took last year.

Shaker boxes are some of the funnest things to make! I stared down that road once to get things all set up to make them and I never quit finished. I have made them as well in a class. Super fun!

Maker sure you get the Smallest box “right side up” you want to get all the fingers going the same direction.

Finished shellacing the boxes today. 3 Coats of the not so friendliest finish in the world. They will dry completely for a few days and then some oooo steel wool. I love the smell of paste wax but I won’t apply it yet because I want to add more finish.

If you are out there Mr Grasselli I finished them, I surely didn’t need one more unfinished project hanging around the Ponderosa.

The fingers need some work on the next box but for a first try i’m self actualized.(freshman psych term)
