I love the natural shape and pins of Big Leaf Maple Burls. I’ve accumulated quite a pile of these things in my garage- they are nature’s art to me. Each one is so different and beautiful. This one is quite large measuring 18” tall and 13” wide, with a thickness of around 3 1/2”. In case you don’t know, burls are formed on trees due to some sort of stress, typically from an agro- bacteria- kind of like warts on people :) Burls from Big Leaf Maples are the only that I know of with such prominent pins.

If you’ve checked out any of my other posts, you know by now that I’m a power carver. For most of my spirit carvings I use a tool that is similar to a dentist’s- it is made by Foredom, and consists of a hanging motor, flexible shaft, foot pedal and hand piece. Some of the bits that I use for carving are as thin as needles. Some of the brushes that I use for painting are as thin as needles, as well.

A good day to all! I hope you enjoy seeing my work half as much as I enjoy creating it :)

Uber cool! Great carving and great job of letting the wood speak.
