A present to my wife, the lovely Mrs. Lumbermeister – this is my first furniture build. It was inspired by Jeff Miller’s Classic Cherry Bookcase, whose plans and Sketchup file are available for $10 via Taunton Press on the web, along with an accompanying series of short videos on the Fine Woodworking website which offer brief but useful techniques.
I created the upper moldings on the table saw with tips from The Wood Whisperer and Matthias Wandel over at Woodgears.ca. The bottom-most shelf (bottom of the carcass) is attached to the sides via tapered sliding dovetail joints, while the top is secured via hand cut dovetails. The back panels are shiplapped, with a 1/2” overlap of each panel, and attached at top and bottom with screws (the only metal hardware in the case). Finish is BLO + furniture wax.
This was a fun project and, in undertaking it, enabled me to advance to the “next level” of the woodworking craft, but with infinitely more levels to go!
I will soon review Jeff Miller’s plans/package for this bookcase (spoiler – it will be a 5 star review). Meantime, my wife is happy, which guarantees further funding and support for this great hobby.
