It been a while since I posted a project so I thought I had better man up and get something on here. This is for a church sponsored charity auction. The wood is from Bethlehem so I thought it was a nice touch.

Nice pen, what finish did you use? I made a couple of olive wood pens, my favorate I burnished with the shavings, and left raw.

Thanks for the post

very nice pen…and I love the detailed history on the tree…one question—-where does the wood come from?cut branches or fallen limbs? or did i miss something since it says they dont cut the trees down…??

Nice work , but I have the same question as napaman as to where the wood comes from…..

Todd, this is my favority finish. I burnish the pen like you with the shavings after sanding it to 20,000 grit using mirco pads. Then soe EEE cream followed with a top coat of Shellawax.

Napa, you’re right the card does confuse the issue a little. This card came from the supplier in Bethlehem. I did some research on this and the blanks come from the branches. After the annual harvest, the branches are pruned to foster fuller growth just like a rose bush. That is where the wood comes from without cutting down the trees. That is also why it is near impossible to find larger chunks. If you find it, it is usually Italian Olive wood.

Excellent – I want one…

There’s a story that goes that an elderly man asked his servant to plant an olive tree for him. “Master,” said the servant, “That tree will not bear fruit for 70 years after it is planted.” “Well then,” replied the Master, “We’ve not a moment to lose.”

That means something really deep, but I don’t know what.

Thanks for sharing, Shannon! It was better than I had pictured it listening to the podcast!

Great pen! I have made several BOW pens. They are great meaningful gifts for people of faith.
