This project is pretty cool for a few different reasons.
Reason 1 – The wood was reclaimed by LumberJocks own chrisstef. Shortly after I joined LJs (and actually became an active participant) I’d posted asking if any locals had any scraps they’d care to throw my way. Stef reached out to me shortly thereafter and told me that if I didn’t mind doing his laundry for a year I was welcome to whatever I wanted from his scrap pile.
He grabbed this piece of lumber and threw it on his bench. Planed it a bit, and threw some mineral spirits on it – you could immediately tell that it was quarter sawn. He shrugged, and told me I was welcome to it. In the last two pictures the remainder of the board this was taken from is what’s right behind it, for some comparison.
Reason 2 – The millers falls plane in the second picture was also given to me by stef. I still need to give it a proper tune up (I’ve got a whetstone in the mail on it’s way to me now, just need to get a honing guide too, but I wanna get that swanky Veritas!).
Reason 3 – Today’s stef’s birthday. Just learned that this morning.
Reason 4 – Tomorrow’s my wife’s birthday, and she’s the one I made this for. If I didn’t have this sweet piece of quarter sawn lumber I probably would’ve picked up a piece of oak at the big box store and wouldn’t have had nearly as cool a story to tell.
Thanks again for making this possible, stef. You are one cool dude. Happy birthday, man. Here’s to many more!
