This is a shallow bowl or platter turned from walnut. It is pretty close to the maximum for my lathe. It measures 1.75” tall by 14” wide. I was inspired by Frank to experiment with my finish. It is BLO/mineral spirits/orange leather dye for the first coat. The small amount of orange dye really warmed up the walnut without distracting from it’s natural beauty. It then has several coats of wipe-on poly. All comments are welcome.

That is really sharp! Is that the steps of finish or you mixed that all together for the first finish?

Hey Kerux, the BLO, mineral spirits and dye were mixed together and applied as the first application.

Just out of curiosity… Are the finishes you use food safe? I know you use leather dyes and limewax, does that make them show pieces only?

Beautiful bowl. I like the idea of using the dye in the finish. It really does warm up the piece nicely!

Great looking platter Joe, I’m just finishing a 14 inch platter also, mines out of cherry, very hard to get an even finish on the cherry. That orange on that walnut is just amazing it really does warms up the walnut.

Thanks for all the kind remarks. I really appreciate them all.
Quint, I would not use any of my pieces with liming wax or briwax with food. I believe all the other finishes are food safe. That being said, I make things that are pleasing to my eye and not for serving or eating food. I feel things like ceramics are better suited for food. I can’t control how people who purchase my pieces will use them.
