This is the first project i uploaded here on Lumberjocks, and my first in hardwood.
It is a key cupboard made out of cherry that I saved from my dad’s neighbour. He had taken down this 100-year-old cherry tree, and had it cut up for FIREWOOD! I came by and managed to get a hold of some of it(unfortunately already cut up into pieces of about 80 cm) :-(
I sawed and dried it, and has spent some time coming up with small projects to fit the short lumber I got from it. (very nice figure though, and I got a whole set of dimensions, including a couple of nice slabs with a width of about 50 cm and a thickness of 3 inches… no idea what to do with them yet.)
Well, back to the key cupboard. Closed, it sits on the wall with as small gaps between the pieces as the construction allows, with grain-matched sides. If you press on the side of front, the outher half swings around 180 degrees ,clicks into position and exposes the keys.
The 180-degree turns and alignment is achieved by a grooved adjustable steel band hidden under the rotating part and a small spring-loaded steel ball (see picture). The whole thing spins on a 10 mm steel pin with a home-made bearing cut and routed from a teflon cutting board (my wife had some comments to that…)
The finish is sanding to 800 grit, two layers of BLO rubbed with steel wool, and finally beeswax.
As a first project from my salvaged pieces of cherry i am quite happy with it.
Comments and suggestions welcome, I plan to make a second one to give away/sell.

That is very nice and serves a great purpose. I would make one for myself but I fear that my family would use it. For them it is easier to yell “Where are my keys!”
Nice save of fire wood!
