My son wanted a loft bed and Ikea wanted a lot of money for something… something … something that I didn’t think much of. As it had been a while since I had done anything (especially large) I looked around and found the Loft Bed Plans on Ana Whites site where the end result did not look like it was made out of 2×6’s.
Most of the wood I got from Home Depot (I really need to find a lumber yard around here) and followed the plan (except where I messed up a little). My daughter wants one now and there are a few things I will be doing different with her’s.
The plans are designed for hand tools and a skillsaw and drill. As a result the posts are built up from 3 – 1×3” boards. This is fine except the plans have you connect the header/footer to a board and then add the other two. This makes squaring up the posts more challenging then it needs to be and the whole thing unwieldy. I think for my daughters I will build up the posts first, this will let me be more consistent in sizing and then use pocket screws for the header/footer and plugs since it will be painted. Instead of screwing the bed box portion into the end posts I will use bolts so the whole thing will be easier to disassemble and move. Right now it will be a pain.
I started this in the fall on the side of the house (because garage a mess) and then it rained so it sat in the garage partially finished until this spring when I cleaned up and finished it up.
