Art Vessel (or just a fancy box)

This is my attempt at an oriental influence style box. I did not have specific purpose in mind for this box other than to try something new and different for me. The top and legs are walnut and the sides of the box is my last board of Macacauba. The small pegs are actually birch dowels put to use as an accent. The finish consists of danish oil and when that was dry a spray of semi-gloss lacquer. The top lift handle was something I tried because I did not want to put a commercial top handle on the lid; however it did not come out as well as I had hoped and if I was to do it over, I would try something else. Anyway a fun project for something different.

A lot to like about this box…..some neat touches; the legs, extended dowels, wood contrasts. It has a great sense of strength and stability. The box will find its purpose…......

Definitely a great looking box! I like the contrast of the two woods, and the pegs!

Despite what you say I personally like the handle on the top too!
Great project! It has inspired me to do something similar!
Thanks for showing it to us!

Beautifully designed and executed! I love the Macacauba and walnut combo. I think your handle has a good start. I like the idea of not wanting to use prefab hardware on a custom made piece. If you add another angle/bevel on the handle to match the box, I think you’ll hit your mark. The proportions are a bit off, as the handle is thick and maybe a slight indentation/groove for a finger grip will trim this down.

I’m on the fence with the pegs, as I like the unique approach, but find the light color distracting because they extend out and demand more attention and take away from the sleek, elegant box. If they were flush, the contrast would work for me. As extended, I am wanting to see them darker. Take this as a critique and not as negative criticism. It’s beautiful and shows your talent.
