“Hobo Joe” is carved from a piece of Big Leaf Maple Burl. This type of wood does not grow in my neck of the woods, so I have to order it. I almost feel like I’m cheating when I have to buy wood because I enjoy gathering my own so much :) I love the natural texture and shape of these beautiful burls.
As with most of my carvings, I shaped this guy up using rotary hand tools- more specifically, my Foredom. But before I got to the Foredom, I used a new tool that I recently acquired- an Arbortech mini grinder. This tool helps to do some major blocking while still leaving a very clean and smooth finish. This is such a dense wood that the power of the Arbortech is a Godsend. I paint all of my carvings by hand. Some of the little brushes that I use for painting are as thin as needles :) Hobo Joe fit very nicely into this burl- he would have fit nicely into any piece of wood though, because his home is where he makes it….HoboJoe will be up for auction on Ebay beginning at 7pm eastern time this evening. You can find me by searching my name. Have a good one!
