I was asked to come up with a presentation for the High School Principal who is leaving. They wanted to do something that would be memorable, something he could display and use around the house. I came up with this tray and decanter set, the town we live in was home to the Homestake Gold Mine until it closed a few years back.
The tray is made out of two Red Oak boards that were glued up side by side and was carved on my CNC. The glass and decanter places were inset 15 hundredths of an inch, the two circles below the decanter are for 3.4 grains of gold from the mine and their small label authenticating them as part of the last gold retrieved from the mine.
The lettering was cut with my favorite carving bit a V60 ¼ inch router bit. I put four coats of natural Min Wax finish on the tray and three coats of Min Wax paste wax to seal it.
I engraved the decanter and the glasses on my laser with the school logo which is the Pick, Pan, and Shovel logo on the tray.
I love it when they come to me with a basic idea and give me total artistic control over the project, so much easier than going back and forth with designs.
