The Democrats versus the Republicans Chess Set. Its pretty easy to come up with ideas for sets, and by far, the simplest ideas involve everyday antagonists…cats versus dogs, men versus women, fishermen versus duck hunters, and this glaring one Democrats versus Republicans.

For this one, the Kings and Queens are all Presidents, Washington monument for bishops, the elephant and the jack ass for knights, white house for rooks, and the US for the pawns. For this set its JFK and Bill Clinton versus Lincoln add Reagan.

Making so many more tables this year than just the plain old boards. Lots of international sales this year so far as well. Have a Namibian Tribal Set/coffee table set up that is very cool in the works, a set based on all crows, a down-under themed set, and I dont know what else is in the hopper…too much for sure!

Presidents about 7-8” tall, pawns about 2.5” tall. Hand carved from Walnut and Poplar (used to use all maple, but the hands just can’t do maple in these production quantities anymore using some Holly $$$ and pear when I can find it as well…I think pear wood is my favorite wood to carve!)

I didn’t get a chance to get pics of this set as the table was shipped out ahead of the pieces being made, but the last pic is off the whole set up at home in the offices of 1 to 1 card in Chicago, Illinois.

If you had made the Democrat Queen, Hillary. Could that piece go anywhere, anyway, never get caught and do whatever she pleases?

Love the set. How many hours do you think you put into a set? Whatever you’re selling them for, it ain’t enough.

If you made a Republican queen you could use, ah…wait, I can’t think of anyone. Let’s see, what woman could we use? Are there any? Palin! She wouldn’t get caught at anything and she doesn’t do whatever she pleases. Then again she probably wouldn’t know which way to move either. She’d think she’s on a checkerboard. Maybe she would be better used in some sort of geography game. I heard she researched and learned where Africa is.

Anyway, great idea. And you did a nice job in the representation. You also might find a niche market for them.

Hint: Produce one with one side or the other with ugly caricatures and you’d have a big marked for either the FOX or MSNBC new junkies.

Great comments! Thanks everybody, funny. All kidding aside, I think a Fox news versus MSNBC would make for a great set….I’d get on the air someplace with that one!

The Republican queen SHOULD be the next US Prez, Condoleeza Rice.

Old Wrangler…I’m reading your comment and thinking to myself the only way to incorporate Hillary correctly would be to make a side that had 8 pieces of her and 8 bill clinton pawns, lol.

Only a few take more than a couple weeks timewise, what’s hard on a set like this is carving a 1” cube into the face of somebody you can recognize…and in the case of the queens a 3/4” cube. If it was clay, no big deal, but the slightest miscue with my chisels on wood(I only use chisels…I’ve never used knives) and the whole thing is ruined. Those you do a little, let them sit, come back to them later…worked on them weeks but just a couple minutes a day. A real Rep versus Dem set would be a lot of fun too…just using all people for the playing pieces, and the jack asses and elephants for all the pawns (this one is going to happen…too many characters to choose from, I could be really funny, and mean, and piss all kinds of people off from both sides, lol). Perfection!

And thanks you guys…I got another 3 or 4 ideas for more sets already from this discussion!!!!!!

My first reaction to this piece was how does this project work since everyone knows “politicians don’t play above board?”. LOL. However, that aside, very nicely done and thanks for sharing.

P.S. For what’s worth, my opinion is there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between either party in Washington as reflected by your use of the US as pawns.

Why did you use a president for the queen? I would have used the vice president. Using the U.S. as pawns was a good touch. I had thought of this type of chess set a long time ago, but I can’t carve. Maybe with a 3D printer or CNC router, I could do this. Anyway, a great job.

Nice set and great Idea. Reading above comments, You could really get in a lot of trouble in this discussion FAST!!!!
Me I think the king and queens should have been the southbound end of northbound elephant and donkey. It would be a perfect description of what politicians have become.
