Drop Spindles

We have a Fiber Arts Fair this weekend so we have been busy making the wood tools that are used in spinning, weaving, knitting, etc. These are three examples of our drop spindles. This is just about the oldest tool known to be used by human kind. Archeologists have found stone drop spindles that are over 15,000 years old.

The student spindle on the right is a simple manufactured toy wheel on a dowel shaft with a brass cup hook. The mid-range hard maple and high-end purple heart are turned by us. At the high-end we also do various metal or semi-precious stone inlays. Quite beautiful.

With the resurging interest in fiber arts, we have difficulty keeping up with our local demand for spindles, lazy kates, niddy noddies, spinning wheels, drum carders, and looms. This, along with our yarn and fabric store, give us about all we can handle in our retirement I think that I played more golf when I was employed full time.

Thanks for looking.

Not sure how they work, I know little about the art of spinning but they are nice looking!
