Fresh off the wires…
Little is known about Gerrit Rietveld’s early life, but a recent discovery in Portugal seems to indicate that, as scholars had thought but been unable to prove, he did, in fact, visit the Adirondack mountains of New York in his youth.
Knick Knack takes up the story – “We were tidying up an old barn in our new house, and, blow me down if there wasn’t this ol’ chair in the corner. I dug it out, sanded it down, and there it was – we immediately dubbed it the ‘Adironveld chair’ for obvious reasons. It’s clearly an early work – the joinery is crude and, frankly, inept in places, but it’s strong and it sure isn’t gonna blow away in the gales we have around these parts. Experts we’ve consulted think it’s white oak. It’s destined for outside, so I’m posting it now before I mess it up with varnish.”
