This is a Cajon I made for my 4 year old son who loves playing the drums. It’s made from 1/2” ply and gave me a chance to try out my new Kreg Jig. the back is rabbeted in and the front is made from some 5mm ply that rings better than the thicker wood. The front is screwed in and the top is left ever so slightly loose so that it has a nice slap when you play the top with a deeper tone in the center. The 2 1/4” hole in the back looks small but the sound out of the drum seems good.

Very nice, Mike. This is on my to do list for my son.

Did you use brace block on the interior or just the pocket holes?

Just the pocket holes which seem to be stout enough for me to put my 200lbs on. I even rock it back when playing and its solid so far. The one thing I do notice is that the top sags under my weight a little and I would move up to 5/8” ply for the next one. Also I’d put more screws in the front but leave the top clear like on this one to get the slap sound. Thanks for looking.

I didn’t put a snare in this one, it was mostly a prototype for the construction method.
