Soooooo back in 1978 I was 10yrs old and grandpa made this bed for me and an oak spindle bed for my sister for christmas that year. Yup I’m old I know. Anyway tonight we set it up in my sons room for him to use again. We lived in a very small house for a while and he didn’t have room for it. Finally got this together and the crappy twin bed that was falling apart out.

Made from solid mohagany its the second of only two ever made, the first was his which one of my cousins have now. This one has some mods from the first one, he routed all four sides of the posts. On his only 3 sides, the inside part of all the posts were not. He changed the profile a bit on the openings also. His had a continuous arc while mine comes out and runs parallel with the post. Both beds have a dark stain of what color I don’t know. I really love this bed for many reasons and I’m happy to see my son be able to use it again. Its been in storage for the past 4yrs and before that it was just a spare bedroom bed with a really bad mattress LOL.

I sure miss my gramps but in his furniture his name and love lives on, hopefully for generations.

Thanks you Grandpa (Kenneth G. Powell Sr.) RIP 1909-1989

A family heirloom does not have to be a bombe desk or somesort of high end furniture it just needs to be something that a family member made that holds them in your memory.

That is a sweet bed. Great story behind it, too.

Beautiful piece, great backstory, and Gramps.

Well done, Gramps!

Thank you all.

Yes Jim I agree and this bed has got its use, Gramps didn’t make things light so me and the wife are glad we got it up the stairs and didn’t have to go to the hospital because of it LOL.

Thanks Chris it was a great story to be a part of too.

Hey Bucket I’m sure Gramps is reading this now hee hee
