Shop Storage II revisited

Lets try this one more time, this time with the right pictures

Once the finish materials were safely stored, it was time to get some serious drawer storage in place. As with the first phase, the existing space under the workbench was utilized. Drawers were designed with specific tools in mind, such as the skill saw, hand plane, jig saw, etc.

I needed to make the entire drawer storage unit modular as the house is only rented and the bench was designed to fit out the door but adding the drawers made it too wide. The unit was build up one layer at a time from the bottom of the enclosure box the entire drawer system was designed to slide in and out of the bench as a complete unit. Several vertical dado’s were put into the inside of each drawer to provide options for drawer divider spacing.

Again, dadoes and glued joints were used and the drawer slides were dado’s cut into rails that interface with the drawer bottom plate. The drawer base plate was over sized in width by 3/8” on each side to create the slide. As it was designed with no face frame, I wanted to try something new and cut all of the drawer faces out of one sheet of plywood and with a few minor errors regarding spacing between the faces, it worked out pretty well. With a little fine tuning in technique, this could be a viable design approach for some ‘real’ furniture in the future.

The handle pulls are teak doweling (about the only wood available in dowels over here) and the pull mounts were cut out on the scroll saw and holes punched on the drill press.

I plan to trim out around the drawers and cupboard to give it a more finished look after Phase III (have to see what remains in the scrap pile at the end).
