This all started as I’m sure it has happened to many by putting on a finish and dropping it in sawdust. I was finishing a beer mug koozie for my brother as a gift for his birthday when after applying a coat of poly, dropped it in a pile of shavings when I took it off the lathe.
After a few seconds of words and thoughts I gave it a close look and my mind started going crazy with ideas. This could have possibilities I said to myself and decided to experiment later. I wiped off what I could, let it dry, sanded again, and finished the mug.
A few days later playing around with the sawdust finish idea, had me wanting to try more and more different things. I applied different dyes to see how it would take. Some look good and some not so good. Anyway here are a couple of sawdust finished items I wanted to share. One is the lime and coconut, and the other is who knows what. I don’t know if this has any value with finishing but I can tell you this, it makes a great smooth grip on something if your looking to make a non slip handle.
If you guys think I’m on to something let me know. If I’m wasted my time, let me know too. The final finish is polycrylic with different dyes and sawdust. Thanks for looking.
