This a project that I made for my wife. It is a pen and pencil holder made from purple heart and lyptus finished with a few coats of tung oil. And the other pics are the injuries that I recieved as a result of kickback from doing an unsafe cut (and yes I knew it at the time I was doing it.). I learned my lesson. The wife almost banned me from the work shop because of these injuries.

You know everyone and I mean everyone has made unsafe cuts of some type. What happens is that when you get away with it, you do another than another and so on. Until it so unsafe that this happens. Sometimes you not as lucky as you and its an eye. I have convinced myself the small everyday glasses I wear are saftey glasses. What going to happen. It can only hit the edge of my eye. Bang, it happens. As they would say at the binging of a shift Lets be safe out there…. I going to make that my little saying at the bottom.
Lets be safe out there…

For context, I’m coming from a distinct newb background and am looking for things I should be watching out for, so my interest is what indicators were telling you that it was an unsafe cut ?

I did not have my blade gaurd and riving knives in place. I also used the rip fence as a guide for a crosscut and tried to push a 2 inch piece between the blade and the fence, which is a big time no no. I was using a pushstick and as the piece reached the back of the blade it turn into the blade and shot back at me.

Stupid is as stupid does and Lord knows I am a very ignorant SOB at times. Glad to see that you will be none the worse for wear but even more glad that you have taken the whole situation seriously enough to give it an honorary degree from the school of hard knocks.
I have learned to always move out of the line of fire when completing a TS cut just in case the ‘stupid factor’ takes control of my thinking.
When I start getting too lazy I Keep reminding myself that TS jigs are not only for convience but also increase the safety factor by keeping me away from making dangerous cuts. This is usually enough motivation to make me take the time and construct the jig.

Not to take away from the great safety advice (or beat a dead horse), I have a small hobby saw I use for those small cuts that would be very dangerous on a larger saw. They are very inexpensive and when used correctly can make some very clean cuts.
Very nice pen/pencil holder, always loved purple heart.

Thanks for all the comments. I have just put a few coats of poly on it, forgetting that my wife wanted to paint her initials on it oops. Oh well she can stil paint her initials on it and I can put a few more coats on it.
