Sofa Table

Here’s a table I made for my sister-in-law to replace an old piano she was using to display pictures and things. The piano has to go so she needed something to put her pictures on. She asked if I had any tables that the Mrs. was not using, but as it turns out, nothing we had would do what she wanted. Besides she has been extremely supportive of my woodworking evolution and outside the Mrs. is my biggest fan.

She and my brother have asked for other pieces in the past and have been quite gracious in accepting whatever I could do. It was mostly pine stained to try and match something else. At this point, they deserve better and I wanted to make something special.

The base is made of cherry and the top is walnut. It’s 50 inches across, 18 inches deep and 30 inches tall. I’ve seen the leg design on other LumberJock projects and thought I’d give it a try, which made the floating top inevitable (both firsts). I particularly like the top because this particular piece of walnut has a lot of color and character.

The third picture is a small box made from the left-overs of the table. The coved sides are yet another experiment based on projects I’ve seen here. It’s 6×6x4. If it weren’t for LumberJocks I might never try some of these things. Thanks for the inspiration and now to work at getting better.

Your execution of the design is wonderful.
Did you attach the top with figure eights?

Thanks for posting

Thanks for the comments folks. The projects here on LumberJocks have given me all kinds of ideas. I can’t imagine ever doing anything like this if I wasn’t a part of LJ. The diversity of designs and techniques is irresistably inspiring, to the point where you see so many things that you forget half of them before you get a chance to try them. And the atmosphere here naturally provides the confidence necessary take that next step.

And Dave, yes the top is attached with figure eights … I love those little things.
