I made this years ago out of Birdseye Maple and walnut. All those pieces are cut at a 5 degree angle so when I put them together they fit together closer.

I made a dowel with a lathe and sanded it while on the lathe, then cut it up into pieces with a band saw and sanded the band saw cut. Then I used spray polyurethane to finish them.
