I needed some handles for my files and I found inspiration on Richard Wile's website:

These are made from Salepe, I experimented with the handle size to see what fitted my hand best, the smaller one seems to be the winner, so I'll turn the other two down to the same size.
The ferrules are copper olive joints, I had a rummage around the big box stores for something that would make a good ferrule and these were the cheapest option (£0.20 each), they come in a range of suitable diameters too.
I'm now eyeing up my plastic handled screw drivers for my next upgrading project…................
