Plane Restorers Take Note!!!

Plane Restorers Take Note!!!

01-17-2014 02:09 AM by poopiekat | 20 comments »

After seeing some plane restorations by LJ ‘ToddJB’ back in December, I was glad to see someone asked him how he got such a terrific surface on the sides of his planes. His ‘workhorse’ as he referred to it, was a simple burnishing wheel! He claimed it would take a plane from rusty to shiny in one step! I had to have one of these, a hundred of my planes are in queue for restoration, and it’s taking me forever! So, I purchased a 3M burnishing wheel, the exact...

Although this book has been mentioned a few times, I don’t know of a formal review here, so here goes: Volume I and II, “Patented Transitional & Metallic Planes in America” is an astounding body of research on the development of handplanes made since 1827. The research deals with planes from 1827 to 1927 in volume I and 1927 to the present in volume II. In it you will find data from the US Patent Office, as well as blueprints, logos, and advertising literature for th...

There is, of course, so-called price guides for just about every field of collecting, from comic books to Staffordshire pottery. Problem is, some categories of collecting lend themselves to well-sorted, organized price guide publications and some do not. For example, American coins…there are a few guides which list EVERY US coin, I mean every year, and grade (condition) with reliable common retail prices. Easy! Has anyone ever attempted to list every tool ever made? Nope, it’...

A Stanley Sweetheart surprise!!

A Stanley Sweetheart surprise!!

Here on the prairies, good lumber and tools can be hard to get your hands on. At a local flea market today, I nabbed an absolutely beautiful, brand new Stanley Sweetheart #4 plane! Still in the box, it still had its wax paper wrapping and plastic bag. Wow! This #4 has a huge, 1/8” thick blade, and an adjustable mouth! And the sweetheart logo is the cherry on top of this great find. Incredibly, this plane was mine for $90, and in Canada the usual list price on these babies is $189-...
