I have been working wood since the mid-80's. Got started when I was in grad school and wanted to do something besides solving equations and running experiments (I am trained as an engineer). So, I signed up for a woodworking class in one of the local junior colleges. From a large stack of Woodsmith magazines owned by the shop teacher, I picked a "Shaker slant top desk" to build for my then girlfriend (now wife:)). The desk called for various double mortise and tenon joints, turned taper legs...not something one would choose as a first wood working project. When I asked the shop teacher if I can finish it in the 8-week class, he said "sure, why not!"
Needless to say, I couldn't get the thing done in that amount of time, not to mention I didn't have the skills nor the know-how. I managed to finish building the desk, but had to resort to using a milling machine in my school's engineering shop to cut the mortises and tenons!
Since then, I have been hooked. As with many, I started as a "Normite" - heavy on using powered machines. Over time, I have picked up more hand tools and the skills to use them. I now try to do most of my lumber prep with machines, and joinery by hand.
