Hello Pisdoff,

Let me welcome you to LJs. I hope that you will find this to be an exciting and rewarding element of your woodworking adventure.

-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome! I’ve been lurking here for awhile, amongst other websites, and I found myself saying ‘where did I see that?’ and coming up with the answer ‘Lumberjocks’ more often than not, so I decided to join.
I belong to a few other websites, including the Wood Whisperer, Matts Basement Workshop and BT3 Central, and lurk at many more. There’s just so many hours in a day!

I am a beginner, just retired, trying to figure my way around some new tools mostly. Figuring out grain direction and keeping a straight edge and dealing with moisture content seem to be the things to learn for starters; if I can get those down before I die, I’ll be a happy man!:-)

I live in NY, Queens to be exact. I have a ridiculously overcrowded basement which is impossible to use for woodworking, so I mostly use ‘portable’ (is 70 lbs portable?!) tools that I can carry up the stairs and work with in the back yard. Therefore, no jointer, no several other things either. I’m going to try to do my limited jointing on a Bench Dog portable workbench. Don’t have a thickness planer either, but I do have a couple of good routers, good jig saw, good circ saw, crappy table saw at the moment.
I hope to move to a new place within 2 years, when my wife retires. The first priority is a workshop, I told the wife bathrooms are not really a necessity, as long as you have windows!
At any rate, glad to be here. I don’t think I’ll be posting any projects any time soon, but with the help of Lumberjocks, perhaps some day.
