Tool-Free Chisel Knob and New Clamping Face

My Jet mortiser came with a brass screw to retain the hollow chisel. It worked fine, but was a little cumbersome to hold a screwdriver while setting the bit square to the fence.

So I traded the screw for a handled knob. The new knob comes with the Powermatic 701 mortiser, and is compatible with the Jet JFM-5 and Powermatic 719. The knob has a threaded post with a brass tip to prevent marring the chisel. This setup makes it much easier to change and adjust the chisels.

I also added a wood block to the face clamp. The wood block has self-adhesive sandpaper for added grip. The block is screwed in place through existing holes in the clamp face. Now you don't have to tighten the clamp very much to hold the workpiece in place.

Pinto,
That trick with the block and sandpaper may be all I need. It is so simple. I always seem to overcomplicate things.
I will give it a try. I also like the knob idea instead of a screwdriver.
thanks,
Stevo

Sandpaper will definitely hold anything in place.
