I am an avid hobby woodworker looking to start my own business someday. For now, I make my living programming computers. I love making traditional, 18th century style furniture, particularly Queen Anne, Chippendale and Shaker. I long to try my hand at several other styles, including Federal and Hepplewhite. However, I'm not particularly fond of Mission (Arts & Crafts).
My favorite aspect of woodworking is carving and hand-shaping furniture elements. I like turning project parts, but I'm not much into turning just for the sake of turning. I particularly HATE hand sanding, but it's a necessary evil for all projects, so I'm trying to overcome my disdain.
I taught myself pretty much everything I know about this craft. I truly enjoy doing it, and look for excuses to make new stuff. Each time I start a new project, I try to incorporate a new technique into each design so that I can stretch my skill set further.
Some things I have yet to try, but would like to:
- Marquetry/Inlay
- Veneering
- Steam Bending

Welcome to LJs. I am sure that you will find this to be an interesting experience. I don’t think that many woodworkers do enjoy sanding although it is one of those activities with which you can put the brain on autopilot and plan other activities. Just realizing that it is an integral part of producing a beautiful end product should help relieve the tedium.
-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.
