Pun Anyone? - 4 replies

To all you Lexiphiles …. (those who love playing on words) To write with a broken pencil is pointless. When fish are in schools they sometimes take debate. A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months. When the smog lifts in Los Angeles , U.C.L.A. The professor discovered that her theory of earthquakes was on shaky ground....

Thought for the day . . . - 6 replies

The English language has some wonderfully anthropomorphic collective nounsfor groups of animals. There is a Pride of lions, a Murder of crows (as wellas their cousins the rooks and ravens), a School of fish, an Exaltation ofdoves and, presumably because they look so wise, a Parliament of owls. Now consider the baboon. The loudest, most danger...

Do you keep track of your WW expenses? - 28 replies

I ask this question here rather than in the Business section as I am asking this of people that consider WW’ing a hobby, not a profession. I’m recently retired and just decided to do an inventory and start tracking how much I actually spend on my WW’ing. I was a little surprised at how much stuff I’ve accumulated over ...

Breakfast conversation . . . - 5 replies

The older you are and the longer youhave been married, the funnier this is. The wife and I were sitting around the breakfast table one lazy Sunday morning.I said to her, “If I were to die suddenly, I want you to immediately sell all my stuff.”“Now why would you want me to do something like that?” she asked.“I figure that you would eventually ...

Shellac Flakes and Alcohol - 19 replies

Does the quality of alcohol make a difference in dissolving shellac flakes? I’ve been using DNA from the BORG and have gotten poor results. (as in the flakes don’t dissolve thoroughly). I’ve ground the flakes and stirred regularly, but no go. I don’t know if it’s the flakes or the alcohol. Woodcraft sells “Pur...

Airport Security Idea . . . - 10 replies

Here’s a solution to all the controversy over full-body scanners at the airports: All we need to do is develop a booth that you can step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have hidden on or in your body. The explosion will be contained within the sealed booth. This would be a win-win for everyone...

Joinery used for bracket feet? - 2 replies

Many period pieces with flat or ogee bracket feet miter the front feet but use half blind dovetails on the back feet. I guess they did that because the miter looks better in front and the DT’s in back are stronger. Seems like it would be quicker and easier to just use miters front and back. Any thoughts on why it was done this way? pete

Glue joint longevity? - 7 replies

Just wondering . . . Does a glue joint strength maintain its strength forever or will the joint weaken over time? Will a glue joint that is stronger than the wood still be as strong in 25, 50, 100 years?I’ve heard some “opinions” on this. Does any one really know how long a glue joint will last? pete

Refinishing Problem - 5 replies

I’m refinishing and old (not antique) desk. The top is a nice, reasonably thick, mahogany veneer. The problem is that it was grain filled with white filler before it was sprayed with the usual thick toners to cover up that nice veneer. I’ve stripped and sanded it but the white filler remains in the grain. I’ve tried applying...
