Finally building up my own shop! #3: Almost finished the assemble on the workbench!

Many lessons learned the hard way in building this. I broke several lag screws due to too small pilot holes. Also, not having a drill press (or good hand drill skills) is severely hurting my ability to accurately line up the nuts and bolts joinery. One of the top stretcher boards ended up almost 1/4” proud. Good thing I just tuned up my fore plane cause it got a workout (shavings on the floor.) All that’s left is dog holes, clean up the top and fasten it to the leg construction. I got a wooden face vise kit from woodcraft to finish it off. One more good afternoon and I’ll be in business.

Finally building up my own shop! #2: welcome to table saw city

So i finally got sick of the crappy mitre bar that came with my dad’s table saw that I’ve been borrowing so I built him a crosscut sled (pic below.) But of course 5 minutes after I finish finetuning it my Uncle calls from 2 states away and says,”Hey, I’m bringing you that table saw I said I’d give you 8 months ago… tomorrow.” I signed “for dad” on the back of the sled and brought the whole saw back to his house. At least if I need to build another one I got some practice.

When the table saw my Uncle brought came I was amazed. It’s a 3hp craftsman contractor saw that must be about 20 years old but is in flawless shape there isn’t even any dust on the trunions. It’s almost the same height as the router table I’m building too so not much adjustment will be necessary for using the router table as an outfeed table as well. The killer part though was that it came with a 50” aftermarket fence that is excellent (pic below – pieces on bench). There is no manufacturer’s label on the parts and I’m wondering if anybody recognizes it. Anyway, I am one lucky guy.

Finally building up my own shop! #1: router table is almost done and big enough for a tank

I’ve been wanting to build this router table before anything else in the shop as it will help me craft the rest of my pieces. I am building the shopnotes#1 router table and is has turned out to be a bit overkill for a router table. So far the base is complete and the top has been laminated. I still need to band the edges of the table, create the mitre track, and create the router plate cutout (a lot left to do.)

Any thoughts on shop setup are greatly appreciated. esp. if anyone has some good forum threads to recommend.
