I have a friend who owns a sawmill/lumber business, and I stopped by to pick this stuff up from him (yesterday) with absolutely nothing in mind. Only possibilities of what could possibly be one day.
But you might have a part in what I build with some of it. If you have any good suggestions for me.
I’ve got a while before I’m recovered from my hand injury (see my other blog entry), so since I won’t be using the machines anytime REAL soon, I need to occupy my mind with ideas for when that day comes when I get back into the shop.
First up – 6 pieces of Black Walnut (with plenty of sapwood) $8 for all 6 pcs. Varying widths of 5.5” (4), 7.75” (1), & finally 8.25” (1)

Next – 12 pcs of 1 3/4” x 1 3/4” x @ 28” (2) – 30” (10) each. Most likely legs for something. $5 for all 12 pcs.

& finally – A stick of Hickory that he threw in, when I asked if he had any, cheap. $2 for the piece.

Who knows, your ideas could be what I build as my comeback project, hahaha.
Thanks for looking,
R
P/S/ – I’ve got lots more wood to get ideas on in upcoming blog posts.

Walnut always makes good cutting boards, and I think that the sap wood would make a great contrast.

The Walnut is beautiful so you can’t go wrong no matter what you dedcide to build from it ….my problem is that I keep collecting with out ever building anything larger than a breadbox ,, so as far as projects go I’m afraid I’m useless ! hahahaa ….....best wishes on a full and speedy recovery : )

Adrian, Cutting boards were the first thing that came to mind for the widest Walnut board.
Dusty, This is some of the most beautiful walnut that I’ve ever seen in person.
Christopher, I think you have a great idea as well. hehehe
Scott, I can’t wait to see what comes of any of this wood.

Karson, You aren’t too far off. We used to play hockey together, he was a scorer, and I was a goalie. hehe
It’s always nice to know someone who can get you quality wood at cheap prices.

well, if I had that piece of hickory, and I wish I did…I can’t see how thick it is, but my inclination is to make handmade tool handles.

Will, it’s 13/16” Pretty much what all the wood is from this guy. I’d like to use the “bad” edge, as I’ve grown to like that rustic look that comes with using non straight edges. Handles are quite a possibility, in fact, maybe even a mallet or two.
