I am fairly new to woodworking, having started about 5 years ago. It all startted after 22 years in the military and almost 10 years with a software company that I felt the need to do more through a hobby. It seemed that the more I thought about finding a hobby, the further away I was from finding one. Then, one Saturday morning, I sat watching the DIY program on TV, and watched David Marks on WoodWorks, making a three-panel screen from mohagany, hardboard, Japan paint, copper leaf sheets, and some chemicals for patinizing the copper. I was amazed at the beauty of the item and just "how simple" it seemed to make, with the right tools. I was "snagged"! I had the "fever". From that point on I was driven to build stuff.
My first projects were centered around just trying to mimic what David Marks did with the copper sheets--I made wood-framed "art" with panels that I had painted and patinized. I took Woodworking 101 at the local Woodcraft store, and then made some furniture pieces for the home. I changed jobs and had to move, which caused me to lose about 1 1/2 years of woodworking, but I finally was able to get back at it.
My time in the shop is usually on the weekends (like many, I suspect). so it takes a while to build things.
