Just starting to carve and am fascinated...have been a painter for years, but this is more rewarding. Have done some small Santas, snowman, wizards, and working on a tree spirit on a pine knot I found.
Have have minor cuts on both hands, but cut two fingers on holding hand (one went through kevlar glove)...teaches you a lot...one is I now wear two gloves (different kinds) on holding hand.
Husband does turning...pens and canes...and builds other things.
We are both retired/disabled and moved to the woods a year ago after Hurricane Rita messed up our home in Lake Charles...pray for us as we face Hurricane Ike now.

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.
God Bless

Hello Betty,
Welcome to LJs. I hope that you will find this to be an interesting and rewarding part of your woodworking adventure.

Welcome Betty – from what I saw it looks like Ike will miss you…one thing to check is that your tools are sharp, I learned like you did and had to buy stock in Band-Aids, but once I learned how to keep my tools sharp I rarely if ever cut the fingers on the holding hand. Good luck and enjoy yourself with the wood carving.
