I have two bandsaws, a newer 18” Rikon and an old Cast Iron 16” Grizzly. The Rikon is permanently set up to resew and the Grizzly is set up with a 1/4” blade for curved work. I installed Space Age Ceramics Guides on the Ricon over a year ago and have had Carter Guides on the Grizzly for about two years. Both saws get a lot of use in my shop. I never really devoted the required time or effort to learn to free hand sharpen chisels and plane irons. I feebly tried a few times but it never really worked well for me. Over the years, I’ve seen and read about the contests between the hand sharpening experts and the honing guide users pretty much resulting in a sharpness draw, with the free hand approach saving time. Granted we don’t have major moisture or rust issues in Southern California but untreated metal still does rust here. For the rust prevention process in my shop the first few years, I used Camellia Oil to prevent rust on hand tools and cast iron surfaces. It worked “OK” and it was expensive (about $15.00 for an 8 oz bottle). It went a long way but still. I used it dutifully with a kind of cool applicator that came with the first bottle I bought.
