Day one at David Marks finishing class in beautiful Santa Rosa. David and wife Victoria are terrific hosts, the class is small with an interesting variety of folks, and the weather couldn't be better. And hey! I'm on vacation! I'm really enjoying the pace of the class with enough structure to keep it moving, but plenty of time to get to know David and the other students and to get all our questions answered. My goal is to establish a broad foundation in wood finishing from which I can expand using books, videos, and such and I'm confident this class will do the trick. It is relaxing and enjoyable and I can't wait to get back to my own shop to put some of these lessons to practice. Five Stars!

Fuming, Bleaching, Tinting, Dyeing, Oiling, Spraying, and Sanding
Fuming (Fooh-ming?, Few-ming? not fumming) I dunno. Fumed some 1/4 sawn white oak overnight with spectacular results and working on burgundy tinted mahogany, bleached walnut and maple, highly figured maple sanded to 2000, lacquer, shellac, oil, and lots and lots of notes. The joy continues. The great thing I'm learning is how to organize my own library of sample pieces. This class is a great investment.

Most of us work alone in our shops or garages so one of the side benefits of a workshop is the opportunity to meet new people who have shared passion or interests. Over the past few days I got to meet some great folks including my new friend Paul from Louisiana who traveled all the way to Santa Rosa, California for the class. I'm sure he will tell you it was time and money well spent.

Is it still called homework if it is something you want to do? Well no homework given, but much homework taken. I wanted to add some coats of oil to the samples in the foreground. From the left are wet sanded walnut, fumed 1/4 sawn white oak, figured maple with lye, purple heart, mahogany, yellow heart, and ebonized walnut. The orange landscape oriented piece in back is maple with yellow tint dye. At bottom is a panoramic of my shop. It was a great class and a lot of fun, but it is good to be home too.

I took advantage of the opportunity to buy the first three seasons of Woodworks and the Chemical Patination and Curvilinear videos. The rest of the Woodworks series should be out soon. All together he made 91(?) shows and each one is a classic. I was hooked from the beginning when I first saw them years ago, but now realize I had actually missed some episodes. David's easy going manner combined with the projects he chose and the lighting combine to capture the aura that has attracted me to woodworking and has stoked my dedication to the craft. Thanks David.
