Well, tonight I went to the big orange store and picked up the lumber for my bench base: (8) 2×10x10’ “premium” construction lumber. It took a while picking through the pile to find something approaching reasonable. My plan is to rip them and plane them tomorrow on my new Steel City planer (not the spiral blade version). This is to prep them for glue up.

I plan to laminate the legs boards with a finish cross section of about 7×4 1/8”. When I laminate the legs I will build in mortices for the cross members.

I also found the manual for my cheapo Craftsman tablesaw and found it is a bit better than I’d dare hope. I assumed it didn’t have any adjustability to it, but it actually does have some so I can do a propper saw setup tomorrow to when I install the new diablo rip blade on it. It even can take a dado which I didn’t expect.

Hopefully some pictures tomorrow or soon anyhow….

Matt,
Don’t be surprised if you get some bowing when you rip the 2×10x10’s. The inner stress will be released and there will be movement to some degree, some more than others.

Thanks, I’m only taking a skim cut off each side to square them up. I’m hoping it won’t be too bad. We shall see!

Next week I will pick up the meranti for the top.

Sorry Matt, my bad, I thought you were ripping them for a (+/-) 4 1/2” thick top.
...carry on buddy, I’ll be over here in the P-Nut gallery watching your bench come together. ;-)

Best Regards. – Len

nothing to apologize for! I’m new at this and could easily have made that mistake! I appreciate the wisdom that comes with experience!http://lumberjocks.com/nes_matt/blog/41922#
