OK, so maybe following me home is a little bit of a lie. I drove about 1.5 hours to go pick it up. ;-)
Almost all the tools in my shop are craigslist finds and for the most part I’ve got all the power tools I need and even whittled down a few that didn’t see much use like a shaper. The last one I’ve been trolling for was mortiser. I looked at a few table top units like the Delta and really didn’t like them. Space being very tight in my shop I wasn’t sure I wanted a floor unit either but seeing a good deal on a this Laguna tilting mortiser I decided I’d give it a go and if it doesn’t work out I should take a big loss.

Like many of the tools you find. This one really had never been cleaned of all the shipping goop and properly adjusted. The action on the lever wasn’t super smooth you would expect from Laguna and one of the reasons I got it for a good price and the previous owners little use. I spent a few hours Saturday cleaning off all old grease and regreasing, I like philwood from years of being into bikes. The end result, smooth action, like cutting butter.
more to come as I give it a go on a few projects.

One upside to living in the try state area of NJ/NY/CT or NJ/PA/DE (depending on how you look at the states) is lots of buyers remorse.
At any given time there is 10 bench top units for sale. I had looked at a powematic unit like this one but he wanted almost retail and some of there newer stuff like the Jet isn’t as hardy as they used to be.
It’s clean now but give it some time in the shop. ;-)
