I bought my house in 2012 and remodeled the whole interior and exterior. I setup a rough shop in my garage so I could do the things I needed in order to do my remodel. Now that I’m done with the work that I/my wife wanted done inside and out, I can finally start setting up my garage for woodworking. Its been awhile since I’ve built anything nice from scratch, mostly just some refinishing or making a few things for the home remodel.
My garage is 23×20 but its not all usable because of a set of steps I put in from the house to the garage (there wasn’t any access from the house before). I would like things to be to the side or as mobile as possible so I have room to work or get my wife’s car in the garage in the event of hail. What I really need help with is how to set the shop up in best way. Its pretty much a clean slate because there is virtually no wiring or lighting and the walls are just stud frame aside from the house side. I upgraded my house to 200 amp service but saved my old breaker box and ran some 6-3 with ground to a 60 amp breaker in my house so I can feed wires for the garage to the old box that I’m using as a subpanel. I’m not totally attached to how I have anything setup currently but I will put my current plans in with the photos. Major tools I have are a 10” Hitachi CMS, 10” Craftsman RAS, Ridgid R4512 table saw, Shopsmith Pro Planer and a 1 horse craftsman router with small router table. I have gotten quite a few ideas from the blogs and forums here but I wanted to post some photos and see if anybody has any ideas or input. Thanks in advance and I appreciate anyone’s ideas.
The west wall which has my steps. On the right side is my current garden tool storage but I will hopefully build an exterior storage building at some point in the future for lawn/garden supplies. Under the landing I built a shelf for small cutoffs and lawnmower/chainsaw storage. Under the steps I isolated and placed a door over the opening and that is where I store my beekeeping supplies.
This is the other side of the wall. I built a rack for my sheet goods and longer lumber that is on casters so I can swing it out and get to it when I open my garage door and back out my motorcycle.
The south side of the east wall is my current home of my RAS and TS as well as my fishing rods and folding chairs since I haven’t figured out a decent place for them yet.
The north side of the east wall is the home to my current mobile work bench. An old cart for folding tables was left at my house when I bought it so I built a workbench on top of it with outlets at each corner that are powered by an extension chord wired into it that gets plugged into my current 1 outlet in my garage. The overhead cabinets are from the house and I’m not completely attached to them. I currently kind of have them organized by category. ie, lawn/garden, fasteners, painting, plumbing, electrical, etc.
And finally the North wall. There is a small workbench that was left that became the home to my mechanics tool box as well as some storage shelving and more cabinets.
Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated. I could use advice on everything from outlet placement, lighting, storage, wall/ceiling coverings etc.
