no previous part Part 1 of Lumber series no next part

So I woke up this morning and saw this ad on craiglist for 58 BF of rough sawn 4/4 cherry for $50. After I got there I found the guy to be the nicest guy you’d ever meet, maybe in his 60’s outside sawing lumber on a 32° indiana winter day. Needless to say I walked away with over 100 BF of cherry, walnut burl, oak live edge, hickory, and sycamore. He just kept tossing in boards. It’s not grade A selecet but I guess maybe 70 plus bf for $100 and a future relationship for lumber. He has some nice figured wood, lots of crotch I think I got a great deal. I’ll post more pics as I work through it

Great purchase. I am always on the watch for great deals. They just don’t seem to come my way often. But sometimes the hunt is as much fun as the find.

Sounds like you found a good deal.

Last weekend I meet Melvin, who owns his own saw mill and has similar prices (so far).

This guy has more than he’d ever know what to do with. He mostly deals with bigger box stores but they dont take the figured wood. I forsee this guy meeting all my future needs. A GREAT day

Great find…what a fantastic contact to have…! It also shows how stupid the big box stores are when they don’t take the figured wood…but then again that is great for the real woodworkers who can get it.

Great score Mike. Wish I lived closer. I’d be his new best friend for sure! That walnut was a steal!

Well I bought a planer over the weekend so I decided to unwrap some figure in my recent wood purchase. I’m very happy with the results. It went right through the crotch with no tearout taking light passes. Yes Andy those are the new frames I made for my copy of your box. I just had to bite the bullet and start over. I think I need a little more furniture building knowledge though all this crotch is screaming out I WANT TO BE A TABLE. LOL

Looks like the new planer is a treasure! Blades must be in great shape to plane that figured wood with no tearout. Did you rabbet those panels into the back side of the frames? Or ‘float’ them in dados? Live edge tables are really pretty easy (look at the walnut live edge I posted): flat top, shelf, 2 legs, done!
