Lots of work at home but I need to give at least short update about the major upgrades I released today. I was working on these for quite some time and I was receiving numerous related requests. But as you will see these upgrades resulted in a serious revamp of our unique Pulse so I actually spent more time on planning / thinking than on actual coding.
In summary, I’ve added the Watchlist feature that allows you to be notified – on the Pulse page or also by the emails – about new comments posted… not only on your own posts but on any posts that you add to your personal Watchlist. This de facto turns on those “comments on my comments” notifications that were mentioned numerous times in the forums.
So how this works you ask. I tried to keep things as simple and streamlined as possible. Following points describe the process:
- When you add new post (project, blog entry, forum topic, review, workshop) it is automatically added to your Watchlist.
- When you’re posting new comment you can choose if you want to add the respective post to your Watchlist or not.

- You can see green Watch and red Unwatch toggle button on each post (in the top right corner) to easily start/stop watching the respective post.

- Email notification settings have been simplified. You can turn on/off email notifications for all watched posts at once.
- I decided to integrate Watchlist directly to the Pulse page. Believe me I was scratching my head about this ;) I didn’t want to add just another checkbox to already cluttered Pulse settings. So I decided to think out of the box and replaced all those challenging dropdowns and checkboxes with just a few predefined Pulse views: new posts & my watchlist (shows all posts that you never checked and new comments on your watched posts), new posts (shows all posts that you never checked), my watchlist (shows new comments on your watched posts), all activity (shows new comments on all posts) and profiles (shows never checked Jock profiles as well as new comments on them – for those who like welcoming new members). New posts & my watchlist is selected by default and I consider this to be the most natural way to use your personalized Pulse – you read the post that you never checked and then you either add it to your watchlist or not. When you start watching the post it will be automatically brought to the top if there are any new comments. Finally you can select time period on the right and see only posts active in the last 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.

- There is a new My Watchlist link in the My LumberJocks dropdown.
Note that all of you previous posts were automatically added to your Watchlist during this upgrade.
Well this is going to take some time to get used to – especially for those using the Pulse frequently. But I believe that the whole process is going to be much smoother now. Plus you can get notified in all those discussions you participate in – not only authored by you.
Any feedback is appreciated.
And MERRY CHRISTMAS, LumberJocks!

Thanks Martin….this will be a great addition to the site..at least for me…is it a big deal to add all comments on the dropdown for the time period. the reason I ask is because with the roll the dice option one might get comments from something posted a long time ago. let me know your thoughts..
Happy holidays to you and yours…

Martin, Nice job. Hope you and your beautiful new bride have a wonderful 1st Christmas together. By the way, is there an easy way to look up or sort the LJ roster (members)?

Thank you Martin.
Curiously I haven’t been able to see recent threads I’ve post in while looking through the list. I don’t know what’s up.

Thanks Martin; that’s going to be really useful. You said : ”Note that all of your previous posts were automatically added to your Watchlist during this upgrade”
Have I misunderstood? There’s nothing in my ‘My watchlist” folder.

is the “all previous posts” all of our own blogs/projects that have new comments? I think that is it.

I commented on a posting. Now I am getting an e-mail on every other comment on the same post. Is there a way to stop this?
I have started to check the “just post my comment” option to avoid this. I am afraid I like the old way better.

First change based on your great feedback – “Add to watchlist” is not a default option when you’re posting a new comment. This way the post will not be added to your watchlist accidentally if you just want to add a short comment and are not interested in following that post in the future.
I will also add a “stop watching link” to all emails so it will be easier to unsubscribe from any post.
Splinters: “one might get comments from something posted a long time ago” – if this happens and you’re watching that project it will be automatically brought to the top of your list because it has became active again so it will fall even into the “active in last 24 hours” category.
Another thing I noted is that I should it make it clear that in case “my watchlist” page is active and empty it doesn’t mean that you have no posts in the watchlist – it just means that there are no new comments on your watched posts… I will add this asap.

Only one minor thing I don’t like – when working my way through “all activity”, posts I’ve read no longer seem to show as being read (“no new posts in the last x hours”).

The new format is going to take a bit of getting used to. For the most part I really like it with one exception, when I read a topic, it no longer appears as ‘read’ in the Pulse list. I have been known to go back and read a topic more than once even though there may not be new comments. Is there a way to find these posts without adding them to a watchlist? Some items require a couple readings to digest. Beyond that, I like it.

i like the idea of being aware of comments made after I’ve commented on a thread – a very handy way to not miss an answer to a question. I also like being able to turn it off later on… I like the notification follow up on facebook, glad to have it here too. Very nice update.

The pulse appears to erase a line item after it is read.
can this be repaired?
also I miss the ability to sort the line items in pulse by buddy etc etc , ...can this portion of the change be returned to the way it was before ?
the watch list idea is good.

Well it’s been a day and at first, when I started working on the eMag, I have to say that I went into a panic, as my routine had been completely shaken up. But it didn’t take long for a new routine to develop and I’m liking it.
It’s funny how we go into automatic and change throws us off balance for a while. I think I’ve adapted and it’s only been one day!!! :)

Seems to me the old way took care of everything this does without the extra step of remembering to click on the watch box. I sometimes like to see comments to other peoples comments besides my own. If i don’t “watch” it….whats to remind me if a subject picks up steam with discussion? Maybe this will all come to me when i get fully awake this morning!

And shouldn’t all activity include all activity????? And my forgetting to click the watch button after my previous post made it very awkward to hunt down this blog post again.

I really like the watchlist, and I’ve been looking forward to that function! Except the items I’m watching disappear from pulse until there is a new comment, then disappear again once I’ve seen the new comment. Sometimes I want to re-read a post for the information, or take awhile to consider a response. But if I watch with the intent of returning later, I can’t find the post again until there is a new comment. Couldn’t it still show up in pulse in the “All” category?
Also, would it be possible to incorporate a “don’t show again”? Kind of the opposite of “watch”? Sometimes there is a vague but interesting title to a conversation that I don’t really care to follow, but I keep going there again and again, because I don’t remember that the title goes with that conversation. I don’t know if it would be a completely different function, or could just be a little add-on to the watch function.
