HELP NEEDED: Name For The "HomeJocks" Site

Blog entry by Martin Sojka posted 659 days ago 1296 reads 1 time favorited 116 comments Add to Favorites Watch

With LumberJocks expanding and GardenTenders growing so nice, I think it’s the right time to add the third related site into the mix. It was requested numerous times here on the LumberJocks… the site with the same format covering all about home building, remodeling, decorating and improvement.

Debbie came up with the perfect GardenTenders name but now we’re struggling a bit with this new name. The requirements are:

  1. It should fit the LumberJocks, GardenTenders naming scheme… preferably starting with “home” or maybe “house” as well
  2. .com domain must be available (you can check the availability of the domain names on most domain registrar sites – Register.com example) – as you will see this is the main problem these days

The author of the final name will get the LJ shirt from me.

Let’s start some brainstorming ;)

Martin, what is wrong with your posting that lists HomeJocks. It sounds good to me.

homejocks ain’t bad – but if we’re jocks and the sister site is tenders, then the brother? site doesn’t have to be jocks too…
houseandhomers sounds neat
chezjocks is too weird

After a slower pan through all the ideas, here, and all the alternate “jocks” names, it seems to me that, while keeping the “jocks” part of the name is intriguing, what makes the “jocks” thing work (at least for me) is pairing it with “lumber”, i.e.garden jocks doesn’t work the same way that things like “steeplejocks” for church tower cleaners or “crackerjocks” for bakers might work. Just an observation. -SST

....and so as we continue to search and re-fine a name for a website, let us not get caught in a ‘wooden’ box of our own making and in so doing, fail to gather and draw from the world around us, all that is fast becoming ‘echo friendly’.

One of the things to consider today is; are we as woodworkers fast becoming a relic of the past, due in time to go the ways of other dinosaurs that could not merge with what is happening today in the world of home//house building and user friendly furniture. I for one like to think of myself as a worker of wood…..a woodworker, and so I surround myself with the terminology that represents that kind of thinking, ‘trees’, ‘lumber’ and ‘wood’. So it was and has been an uplifting experience that draws me here to “LumberJocks” and this is great, but now we enter a new area of thinking where ‘lumber and ‘wood’ is not all that is, as we seek to draw many more into the world of experiencing home//house building….

Right on to the sentiments of Frank in an earlier post. I think we should sensitive to the idea that there can be a lot of creativity in home building and renovating and that’s what would attract me to such a site. At this point in Earth’s history, that would be a good thing.

It’s not just about wood and there is an opportunity in today’s home building to address some of the issues with homes ie: they are wasteful ( energy, resources, land), poorly designed, poorly built and are primarily designed to maximize builder’s profits, not long term livability and sustainability.

We are currently planning a low impact ( resource/embedded energy pov) home from logs and adobe brick with passive solar heat, solar hot water heating and micro-hydro renewable energy. I would love to share some ideas. I plan to design and build this home to be viable for the next 500 years, not 5 or 50.

So, in that spirit, I suggest ShelterShakers.com or ShelterShifters

ShelterShare is available but will cost $1700
