Based on your suggestions, I’ve finally added Donations page! So now you can support LumberJocks financially by donating money through PayPal (note that PayPal also accepts all the major credit cards).
Donated money will be used to cover the growing hosting fees, to buy banners and spread the word about our website and to make our unqiue Awards and Challenges even better… maybe I will also buy one-two beers if possible ;) You can choose between donating once or making a recurring contribution each month.
In addition to adding the Donations page I have also updated our brown bar at the bottom of the content area. Now it contains three buttons/banners that are promoting three basic ways you can use to support our website:

Any support is much appreciated. Thanks!

Me too, done.
Almost feels like a PBS pledge drive, everyone chipping in to keep things going :). Maybe you should have regular pledge drives. It would a new concept for a web site, at least I haven’t seen it. Maybe you could have a little symbol next to your name, that shows you are a LJ supporter.

I’m a member of photography club that has the same “donor system”. I have never felt the pressure to be a donor and I have never felt guilty because others have donated and I have chosen not to. ... but that’s only my opinion…

Frank, It’s not a matter of pressure. It’s just that there is so much activity on the site now that this is getting lost. I’m kicking it back so everyone gets a chance to know of the program. If you choose not to participate that’s up to you. Tying a donation system into Nazi Germany is a quantum leap.

....exactly; ” Tying a donation system into Nazi Germany is a quantum leap.”
—-and thats what I’m sure was going around the town squares back then….after all it wasn’t a ‘quantum leap’, till they ‘separated’ the elite with badges from the ‘different’ and started passing out stars!
”Frank, It’s not a matter of pressure.”
—-anytime we separate other’s; through culture backgrounds, ability to pay (and make no-mistake, a donation is a payment) geography, and the many more reasons, (should I continue?)....”too much activity”; and then promote the use of badges so every-one knows where we stand, we are implying that I am part of the denominational party….the ruling class….the ‘in crowd’.
Thomas when you say; ”I’m kicking it back so everyone gets a chance to know of the program.”; well….
—-I’m sure that’s what they where saying back then and are still saying today in parts of the world….”I’m kicking this sonofabitchback, so every one gets a chance to ‘KNOW THE PROGRAM’....’get on board’ and ’get with it’!
NOW, just so all know, I do give money to programs of helps where the money goes for the good of the people, but I do not and will not ever give when some-one is making use of my giving to draw attention to what I am doing or further promote by my giving, to their cause. I knew//know of a master some 2000 years ago who said; that one should enter their closet, shut the door and take care of their business in secret….and that when the time came, their good works would be declared from the rooftops….
....this same master also said; to not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing!
Now giving is and can be a good thing; whereas the promoting of badges and who is doing what, sours the whole ‘matter’.
To further answer your remark Thomas;
—-about Nazi Germany and ‘quantum leaps’....”Tying a donation system into Nazi Germany is a quantum leap.”
Well sometimes it takes a ‘quantum leap’ of a statement, to bring out the where it can go wrong—-before it does go wrong! And I’m sure that back then, when every one was touting the new way of the day, no-body was paying much attention at first to the ‘separation’ that was all-ready taking place. First came the elite with their badges and then those who were different were given stars….why some may even want to give me a star since I’m sure what I’m saying is ‘not politically correct today’. Oh well, never had or have time to be correct, I usually just open my mouth and sound forth what I see on the horizon, like if I had been living back then….I’m sure there would have been those, who would have promised me a free ride on a train to some special woodworking camp….
Well thats my two cents worth, and after all what do I know….further more, I hope that what I’m saying is understood in the spirit I am saying it….I do love LJ and the folks that come here....it’s just these badges are not what I call ‘in the spirit of being a LumberJock….but then thats my opinion.
Thank you.
GODSPEED,
Frank

A most interesting perspective Frank and difficult to ignore. I remember being asked one time how many sins it takes to be a back-slider. The question cannot be answered, but as you point out, everything starts with a small, seemingly harmless change. I see and understand your perspective, and yet if taken to it’s logical conclusion, there would never be any recognition of accomplishment, and no opportunity to express gratitude. I gladly signed up to donate and will continue to do so because in my brief time here I have recognized explicit value and from where I sit, my donation is an expression of gratitude. By the same token, it does not seem unreasonable for Martin to express gratitude by adding a small appendage to my icon.
Unless there is separation there is no originality and no creativity, and more importantly, no expression. The devaluing of and expression of gratitude is no less dictatorial than the requirement to participate.
The same Master that said that your left hand should not know what your right hand is doing also said come out from among them.

Hello Russel;
Thank you for your well thought out reply and as I am sitting here working on a building site design and formating cost, sketches and figures for a building permit, I will have to hold off and think upon what you are saying for the moment.
However I can respond to your first well noted comment; ”I remember being asked one time how many sins it takes to be a back-slider. The question cannot be answered,....”
—-In my opinion this question can and was answered the moment the person asked it to you….and as I remember from my days of religion and doctrine, this is a largely debated ‘question and answer period’ in schools of theological thought. The person who asked the question has all-ready separated them-self from being a in-slider to a now back-slider, since that same master constantly made reference to the fact that it’s not of first importance to whats going on with the external as to whats happening with the internal. Body actions are first born out in the fertile soil of the heart and therefore what be-comes manifested in the body as you reference to back-sliding, has all-ready been long taking place in the heart. If I have to ask what it takes to be recognized as separate from that body of truth….then in essence I am all-ready as one who has first thought of being separated in my heart….the sin of the religious mindset, first takes place in their heart.
And who ever said woodworking has to be dull….look at this thread, support and donations-badges-pressure-stars-Nazi Germany-quantum leaps-sin-back-sliding-heart-issues-separation-truth….and what will come next?
Loving these comments and thank you….

I recently read an article discussing the sales figures of the Honda hybrid vehicles when compared to some of the other hybrids on the market.
It seems the Honda hybrids designed to look no different than the standard model (Civic and Accord, for example) are suffering in sales! When consumers were asked what drew them to other hybrid cars over the Civic and Accord, the majority of them indicated they wanted a car that looked “different” so others knew they were driving a hybrid.
I thought that rather silly. Why should I care if other people know I’m driving a hybrid car or not? My purchase of one would more likely be based on the better gas mileage and what I consider to be pleasing to MY eye.
It is a bit sad to me that enough people feel that way as to cause a noticeable trend in hybrid car sales.
Frank’s remarks about patches reminded me of my favorite Dr. Seuss story, The Sneetches. Not sure how relevance there is, but it seems there is some…
So I wonder, can I make a donation and NOT have the “donor” badge show up?

It is a most interesting thing that the “Mark of the Donor” has become something to talk about. Frank makes a good point by saying that there are those who might use their Mark as a sign of superiority, those I’ve not yet seen that attitude here. The mix of professionals and beginners and the interaction thereof is a model of the best of diversity. There may come a time when someone makes that distinction, though I hope not.
For me, I found a certain satisfaction is looking to see who is online and seeing the “Mark of the Donor” frequently. The regularity of it’s occurrence said that there are many who see this site as a valuable commodity and are willing to help however they can. For those that do not bear the Mark, I didn’t think of them any different than I did before. As a matter of fact, I didn’t really pay attention to who had the Mark, but instead, I saw that the Mark was becoming common. If the Mark goes away or if it stays, I cannot imagine the site and it’s participants being any different.
So, Martin, while I like seeing the Mark of the Donor, I would not be bothered if it went away.

Ethan,
I suspect yes, you can make a donation without having a notation attached to your badge. Martin asked, at least he asked me, if it would be ok to recognize me as a donor with a notation at or about my icon. I thought sure, why not.
Little did I know that what I suspect was an offer of appreciation on Martin’s part would single me out, mark me as one of the aristocracy, a sneetch, or perhaps a jack-booted thug. None of those hurt my feelings, I’ve been called worse.
I don’t mind having the little gold star. I also don’t mind not having the little gold star. Although from the sounds of things here maybe it should be a little pair of black doc-martens.
I admit the donor tag is a bit intrusive, but I also suspect this is a first pass.
When the peasants storm the bastille I guess I’ll be one of the first with his head on the block. Maybe I’ll get a little dark cloak I can pull over my icon and sneak out the back.

Um, Russel, so internally I was agreeing with what you just said, I don’t really mind if the donor notations stay or go.
BUT, and this is kind of my nature, now that someone has decided, stridently, that my having this annotation makes me a bad person, well, now I want to keep it. Now that I’ve been told I shouldn’t have it, now I want it.
Side note, this kind of behavior leads to black eyes and bloody lips when you’re a young man :).

So I thought about it a bit more on the way home.
So here are the facts as I believe them.
Fact 1 – I really enjoy this site
Fact 2 – I don’t want this site to collapse, like many other startups have
Supposition that’s probably fact – It’s not free to host and support a site like this.
Impression 1 that I think is fact – Martin is investing significant personal resources, money and time to make this web site work.
Impression 2 – It sounds like Martin is reaching a reasonable limit and if we (I) want to continue to see maintenance and improvements to LumberJocks Martin is going to need additional resources.
Result of Facts 1 and 2, and Suppositions and Impressions – Martin offered an opportunity to chip in, so I did.
Fact 3 – I’m not going to be chipping in enough to carry the site.
Result of previous along with Fact 3 – If I want this site to continue to grow and improve other people better be chipping in too.
So, where does all of this lead me to? Well, it leads me eventually to an answer to your question about whether I now want “you” to donate. The answer is Damn Right. Not because I donated, or because anyone else donated, but mostly because I want this site to keep on growing and improving, and if that means “you” need to donate then yes, I want you to donate.
A better person would probably say something like, “I want you to donate because ‘you’ enjoy the site and see the value”. Yeah, whatever, I want you to donate because I like this site.
LumberJocks is a great site.
I get as much value and more than most of the $25 woodworking books I order from Amazon.
I get at least as much value and more than most of the magazine subscriptions I get.
I get way more value than the last three popular DVDs I bought.
I get a lot more value than the last time I went out for cheesecake and beer.
Given all of that it’s pretty easy for me to justify kicking in a donation. Like mentioned above, it’s like the PBS model, if you like it, kick in a little to keep it going. Now open your pocketbook and shake loose a few bucks.
.
.
Postscript to my comment above, young men and bloody lips, that was in reference to me and lifes resulting head knocks, not meant to be interpreted as relating to this discussion.

Alright, it looks like the offensive badges have been done away with, and we are all on an egalitarian basis.
I didn’t hop on the “I done it” list earlier, and I suppose I considered the admonition that one not make a show of one’s good works.
But Frank’s biblical reference to Matthew 6:5-6 is not even to the point of the scripture. It’s not about hiding one’s good works. It is about making a show of one’s religion for a gain in standing in the community, and more to the point, about making a show of prayer. The same verse makes it clear that Our Father in heaven knows what we need before we ask Him.
Well, we don’t share His omnipotence. We didn’t know that Martin holds down a day job and that this wonderful site with all it’s finesse and fun constituted an increasing burden in time with no compensation, or that a breaking point was being reached. So he asked, and like many have pointed out the little bit of change I ponied up probably could be offset by not buying some widget for woodworking that I could (and should) pass on. It is a small sacrifice for something I value highly and something that has given me new pleasures and new friends.
Let’s get something straight here. I squeak by from paycheck to paycheck. I work fifty hour weeks for the overtime so I can dine out occasionally, buy my wife flowers occasionally, etc. So even a small sacrifice is a real sacrifice to me. But it is well worth it if it means Lumberjocks keeps going on, and is free to those in more dire straights than myself. Plus a free site keeps the turnstile open for folks who want to wander in and see what we are about. I put in a couple of hours a week on the Tour thing because I think it might be fun for others, because working in Photoshop and Illustrator is what gets my buzz on, and makes the site more interesting. Plus, I have more time that I do money. I decided to donate the bit I thought I could afford to keep the site free and to help Martin out for the hours he puts in keeping this wonder afloat.
I had a moment of consideration when I hit the Paypal button and didn’t hit the other button that would keep my donor status secret. But I let the Donor sign go on because it gets the word out that donations were needed. Not because I wanted to look like a bigwig, not because I have a need for ostentation. Certainly it had nothing to do with Nazis, violating biblical principle or any of that other HOGWASH. Live free or die is a great tradition in New Hampshire, but it doesn’t pay the rent.
So, I’m kicking it back up to the top… let’s keep getting the word out that help is needed and the vehicle to do so is easily at hand.

While I highly doubt that Frank intended to comapre any of us to jack booted storm troopers or anything remotey equivalent, I do see the point he’s trying to make. Albeit I do not agree with his perspective, and I would have chosen a different analogy to express it, I think I understand his opinion. Personally I didn’t understand what the “donor” even represented until I read this thread. Now that I know, I wouldn’t have taken it as any more than showing support for a cause, just like the yellow bracelet I wear (when I’m not around rotating machinery).
Badges or no badges is really irelevant to me, I love this site.

Well, the badges are gone. OK, who cares. I for one never gave 2 whoops whether I received any recognition for the donation. I did it to help pay for a service I use to my own benefit. I just won a contract because of my page and projects on this website. Christ also said, “The workman is worthy of his hire.” Now I’m going to say it right straight out; Frank,I resent this valid request for our help being compared to Christianity as much as I resent it being compared with Naziism. This is purely economic in nature, not religous or political. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with either. If any of you don’t want to help support the services here on this website, that’s fine. It will still be free and none of us would want it any other way. And while you’re at it, get on your knees and thank Our Heavenly Father that we live in nation where we are free to say, think , worship and do as we please. Enough!!

Wow! what a read!
First of all…Martin this is, if not the best, one of the best, sites on the internet, hands down!. and i believe all the other LJ’s will agree with me (even Frank). You’ve done an excellent job and you continue to do so and i really apprecite all your work.
Secondly…comparing anything (even the current political administration) to Nazi Germany is a shaky slippery slope that should not be done. The horrors that were committed during that time compare to little else in history, certainly not websites with badges or no badges for donations (elitist status or freeloading status) I know i may be kicking a dead horse by now but i felt i couldn’t not say anything. for now, my status is freeloader, because of my finances but as soon as finances permit that will change. do i care whether or not i am recognized for any contribution i may or may not make, no i don’t. i think i see where you’re coming from on the donation theme of not wanting recognition. when i help people out, i do so out of my desire to help, not out of any desire to be recognized for my “righteousness”. but honestly, giving money to help out LJ is really for my personal benefit because of how much i enjoy this site (i know that’s somewhat selfish, but so be it) granted my donation may help out others that cannot or simply don’t, for whatever reason, donate and that’s okay with me. i suppose you could say, though, that my donation is mostly selfish because i simply don’t want this site to ever disappear. Frank, i have always appreciated your wisdom, knowledge and, of course, your nature walks that you share with us, and whatever anyone else may think i also appreciate your thoughts on this whole donation, marks or no marks, hoopla. If everyone always thought the same thing, did the same thing, acted the same way, then how would we know what balance is? How would we know what mental challenge is without ideas different from our own? Frank, i sincerely hope you are not offended by anything i have said here, if so send me a PM and we’ll talk. i do always appreciate your point of views even if i don’t always agree with you.
To everyone else…i hope i haven’t kicked this horse too much, just felt the need to comment.
ps. Dan it looks like you have a wonderful granddaughter!

Dan,

You’re a lucky man indeed! I’ve got two boys, so who know maybe one day you and I might be relatives, hahahahah.
this picture is a bit dated. the youngest, Micah, is now doing the army crawl to get where he wants to go, so he’s mobile and driving my wife crazy.
Seriously though, you’ve got two great looking granddaughters!

I would really, really, hate to get up in the morning to find this site closed down. I have been self employed for the biggest portion of my life. Having said that, I know this site has overhead ,not to mention the work involved. If nothing else, look at how many people enjoy it.
P.S. The granddaughters are beautiful !

I don’t know what you Canucks have but down here in the lower 48 we have PUBLIC BROADCASTING.
And they will take time each year to try and make you feel guilty if you listen without paying and they will offer you certain “badges” depending on how much you contribute. In the end, it’s still there so what is given suffices.
They also offer other little benefits. Like what we got from Dan and Doug. (Personally, I appreciate the LJ contributions more.)
Can we put this off ‘til next year for the next fundraiser. Just like PBS you can keep donating all year long if you like.

I have been running my own business for many years, many aspects of a business is beyond my education and I pay others to take care of them for me, CPA, attorney, Insurance broker etc… I can not do what Martin and this page provides me, I consider my “badge” a PAID invoice.

Fellow Lumberjocks,
Because I have been so busy I have not been able to keep up with all the posts or day to day activities.
I see the need to help with the costs of this great web site.
Period.
For those of you who have followed my blog and the story of This Old Crack House know I give freely of my time and resources to those who are just discovering the magic world of woodworking.
I realize this is Martins creation but I see him as merely a caretaker of a grand and gifted site for an extrodianary diverse and talented group of people.
I consider it a privilege to donate and do my share to make this great site available to all people regardless of background, experience, or ability to help.
To me, its is no different than paying for a subscription or dues for a woodworking club.
I do so with honor.
And no expectations or strings attached.
I want this site to continue for all.
I am happy to assist in what ever way I can including donating money.
Done.

I’ll admit that I’ve avoided contributing to sites in the past because I wasn’t sure that I was ready to commit. I kinda thought that I’d move away from it in a short time, so I’m not too surprised that there’s a bit of a plateau. Yet, I’ve found so much on this particular site that it’s going to take me months just to get through what’s already here let alone what I know to be coming in the future. With that in mind, I was convinced that contributing to this site was a debt I owed and happy to pay.
