Private Messages have been the most requested feature in the recent weeks. Now you can enjoy them on LumberJocks.

Since the messages are private nobody except the message sender and message recipient has access to the message. So you may use them to send any kind of private data like email addresses (or other contact details) or to send anything addressed specifically to the recipient in case you don’t want to show that information publicly.

You can always access your messages through this direct link: http://lumberjocks.com/messages (note that you must be signed in) or by clicking on the “Messages” link in the header – this link also changes to reflect the number of new/unread messages in your inbox:

Messages link in header

Messages link in header (showing new messages)

By default you are notified about the received messages by email – you can change this setting under Account → Email notifications.

If you want to compose new message you have two options. Either go to Messages → Compose new message (here you will be able to select one of your buddies as the message recipient) or browse to any Jock’s profile page and click on “Send a message” link to compose new message addresed to that Jock:

Send message

I hope you will enjoy this new feature and if you will have any comments about it don’t hesitate to contact me.

I just sent my first message… this is fun. this way you can instant message and it does NOT become an entry. But it wont save it if it’s blank (already made a mistake).

C’mon, somebody message me…

Thanks for saying thanks, buddies. Just use these private messages only if needed.. otherwise stick to standard comments, replies etc. please.

Hope you also noticed cool new little icons on various actions (like send message, make/remove buddy). I will be adding more of these across the site down the road.

And Dennis, don’t bug me too much please.. I want to sleep well LOL

Martin, does it have an audible Message warning feature to let us know we are loved by our fellow lumberjocks?

I didnt see no icons at all, you must have forgotten them On my messenger :((

No audible warning, Obi – just email notification for now.

I mean the icons used for the read/unread/replied messages and also the ones used on the profile pages for the Send message and Make/Remove Buddy.

Has the public comments decreased Martin? I’ve been outta touch for several days – out of town, and, rumor has it, we lost power too…. guess I should have been more careful when making requests of the weather gods! Looks like things have been fairly busy, no?

with my lack of knowledge it is really enticing to think that I can privately ask someone a beginner question instead of posting it for all to see, but then I have to remind myself that there is no “stupid” question and that perhaps the answers to my questions will someday help another beginner… and so, thus far, I’ve tried to stay “public”

agreed Debbie…

I’m trying to keep all my discussion and questions out here in the open, perhaps only unless they may pertain to private information. (real names, addresses, and other things that don’t readily come to mind.)
