Not one of the positive features but unfortunately it seems like there was no chance to avoid adding self-managed blocklists here at LumberJocks. Requested by many members recently I believe this new feature will be vital for further growth and good atmosphere here.
When you choose to block someone, it means they:
- Can’t comment on your profile
- Can’t comment on your posts (projects, blog entries, forum topics, reviews, workshop)
- Are removed as your buddy, and you are removed as theirs. They can’t add you as a buddy again,
- Can’t send you private messages
To block someone you have to go to a given member page and click on the BLOCK link…

...that will bring you to the block confirmation screen.
You can see the members on your blocklist by clicking on MY LUMBERJOCKS dropdown and then on MY BLOCKLIST link. Unblocking is easy by going to the blocked member page and clicking on UNBLOCK link.
Be careful with this new feature, please ;)

Ahhhhhhh.
The Neil button :-)
Thank you so much, Martin.
It IS a shame, but … with over 18,000 members … it’s also rather inevitable.
It WOULD be interesting if you were able to monitor … patterns.
IMHO … if particular people are being added to the block list by quite a few people … it may be worth evaluating whether they are ADDING TO or DETRACTING FROM the value (socially AND economically) of the LJ community.
Thanks again :-)

I can monitor the patterns, Neil. But that’s a topic for another discussion.

An unfortunate fact of life.
Thanks for the tool but I hope I never have to use it.

I never thought I would see the day that this feature would be added on this site, but obviously you have responded to the wishes of several members for this feature to be added.
I suppose it is nice to know it is there, but I for one have had no occasion to have used a feature like this in the past and I am sure I will never have to use it in the future (Am I tempting fate by saying this?)

unfortunately there have been times I could have used it. Thanks Martin. We know 99.9% of the time we don’t need it but when we do it’s there.

As a site grows to this size, it’s inevitable that there will not be 100% harmony. I, too, hope to never use it but am glad it’s there.-SST

Thanks, but I wonder?
In a discussion with a troubled nieghbor who was ranting on about Obama and the non-christian heathen horde. I offered a pondering… Dean,I said, imagine if you will a button, a really special, big red button. Now imagine this button is very rare, only appears to a few and for only 3 seconds if that, then it’s gone forever. This button, if you decide to push it, removes all from this earth that are not of a like mind such as yourself. Only people who believe, think and dream like yourself will be left. The question is will you push it in time…3-2- Bam! He slammed the top of the fence quickly as if pushing the button as I started the count down.
Now that’s the difference between us, Dean I said, you the BA Christian would push that button and I the BH Liberal Heathen would not. I choose, not to save the others but, not to be alone.
This place filled with only my kind of agreeable like minds would be very dull. While there are a few I agree we could do without ultimately we mostly benefit from roses and turds alike. More from the roses but every now and then a turd stops stinking and benefits the rose. JMHO

Maybe this will stop some of the sniping.
But should be used judiciously(?) because of the reasons given by JAGWAH.

Wow. I hope people use it with discretion. Sounds quite dire, and in my opinion, people ought to be mature enough to settle disputes among themselves civilly, only using such a radical treatment in very extreme cases. Let’s hope for the best!

To me … it’s a feature, and … much like the Internet, itself … is neither good nor bad, on its own.
For those who think it’s an inherently bad idea … it’s simply a feature that you won’t ever need to use.
I don’t see how it can cause any collective harm, though.
Nobody’s silencing another LJ member, by invoking a block feature.
They’re simply tuning that person out.
Over the years, I’ve participated in a number of different forums, focused on my various interests. ALL had an “ignore user” function. Never did I hear a SOUL complain that it had a downside, or was harmful to the group.
I’m sure it won’t be, here, either.

an interesting implementation. I must say I have never seen anything like this on any other forum I’ve been on. nice work Martin, but as stated, this would need to be used with discretion. I am interested to see what discussions this feature will trigger pros/cons/issues/etc.

Martin, just as we can see ‘who’ is counting us as a buddy, can an individual see ‘who’ is blocking them?
