no previous part Part 1 of Bench Utilities series Part 2: Bench Hook »

I have been working with all my new (read antiques that I have been cleaning up) hand tools for a few months with some pretty makeshift work holding devices. Starting a few days ago I have finally had a chance to start working on a few bench top helpers. I think I have enough MDF and scraps to make a bench hook with a planing stop for small work and to help with some chisel work, a bench hook for cross cutting (will add a miter too) and a shooting board. Having these helpers should make working easier and safer and I’ll post some pics when they are complete in the next few days.

One weekend this summer I had a day with nothing to work on so I decided to make a hand full of bench accessories that I had plans for. Its been only a few months and I don’t know how I managed with out my bench hooks. I built two bench hooks the exact same except one thinner then the other. The thinner one often acts as a saw horse and extra support if I have a longer board and am working across the grain. I would suggest you make two bench hooks also. Might as well if you have enough extra MDF. Its handy having two.

Also, I don’t know if you do hand planing at all or are going to but make sure the plane stop isn’t too high or maybe even make yet another bench hook with a small stop. I am often hand plaining small boards less then 3/4 thick and my bench hook has a 3/4 stop attached. My plane blade has cut the crap out of it. Not a big deal as I can replace the piece but it gets in the way of my work.

I also drilled holes in my bench hooks and I hang them either on the leg of my bench or above the bench. Its handy keeping them close. Especially if you end up using as much as I use mine.
