Box Making

114 days ago by Dustmite97 | 6 comments »

I have just got into box making. I am limited to what I can do with the tools I have. I have not been able to do good joinery with the tools I have. I have a table saw but I don’t own any special jigs besides a miter gauge. What I would like to do is finger joints or dovetails. I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to make that type of joinery with the tools I have. If anybody asks, I also have a router, drill press, crosscut saw, and a miter saw. Not sure if I can make good jo...

Houndstooth Dovetails

361 days ago by Woodhacker | 23 comments »

Houndstooth dovetails use varying sizes of tails (or varying sizes of pins…depending on your perspective). I’ve wanted to try them for quite a while now. This blog shows most of the process I’m currently going through. To get the effect it seems to me you need more tails/pins per corner than one would normally think about. In this case like a few of my other recent boxes posted, I’m using Caribbean rosewood and curly maple. Most often, (when you see them at all) these are done by alte...

I’m going to be introducing you to my shop one tool at a time. I’m currently upgrading and making jigs/fixtures for a number of my machines and buying some great industrial tools in the near future. My shop is coming together piece by piece and I hope to show you the progress as I go. So here’s the first of my recent upgrades… I recently upgraded to a “Poly Belt” on my Performax 22-44 Pro from the original 100 grit conveyor belt. Most people don’t ...

Bandsawn Box #1 #1: Getting the wood ready

694 days ago by Karson | 22 comments »

Well I went to the attic, actually surface area of the wood rack in the workshop and picked up a Bigleaf Maple Burl piece that I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. It came from the Pacific Northwest of the USA. The piece had been water blasted to remove all of the bark off the outer edge of the burl and that leaves the spikes that are seen here. The block had been dipped in wax to minimize the drying of it. I then went to the jointer (spiral Carbide blades) and cleaned up the edges. ...

Some things that I've learned about finishing. Some of them I also use. #1: Using Scrapers

888 days ago by Karson | 16 comments »

Sharpening and using a scraper. When I suggest that you should use a scraper in your woodworking. Some are going to say “What?” Others are going to say “I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work!” And maybe others are going to say “I use them every day!” To the latter I’d say “Get a life!” To the previous I’d say “Hang on and we’ll fix your problems!” And to the first I’d say: Scrapers have been used in woodworking for a long time. It is believed that the earliest scrapers were made out of pie...

Veneering a table top chess table #1: Making the Veneered surface

895 days ago by Karson | 7 comments »

The making of a chess board with veneer. Mark made a comment earlier this week about a chess board that was presented as a project, that he’d like to make one for his son. I sent him a private message and suggested that if he wanted to make a chess board, that I’d provide the veneer and some instructions on making it. There have been other posts in the last couple of weeks about veneering and vacuum veneering. Mark replied that he didn’t have the equipment to do the veneering. I told hi...
