Other than epoxy for bartops/counter tops - 19 replies

I have used a lot of 2 part epoxy for these. While I like the product very much for some applications, the high-gloss and hassles are not good for many applications. So when used properly, what is a good water-resistant finish?

2014 in review, hard but going in the right direction. - 33 replies

One year ago I was coming from what I considered to be a rough year. But I felt that the future looked bright. Well of course January 20th a bright future seemed lost with the loss of my shop. My goal going into the year was to have a 50% increase in my business. At that point, it seemed not only impossible, but could I have the stom...

High pressure vs low pressure sales - 38 replies

I generally don’t go rushing up to everyone who walks into my booth. I position myself in the center and greet everyone who comes in. Depending on how they are going through, I offer information about the wood and the way I produce the items. I generally never give them the speech about how I think they really need any item. Does my app...

Tree ID hopefully - 35 replies

I was cutting trees in north central Nebraska today. Ran across a tree that we couldn’t identify. I could not get very close to the leaves, but zoomed in as much as I could. The bark ran up the trunk is a spiral pattern. Here is a picture of the tree from a distance. The trees in the area that it didn’t match wer...

How much time do you spend on the parts they don't see? - 46 replies

I have been doing a lot of sanding this afternoon. Some of the areas that I am sanding are where realistically they will never see (underneath in this case). The question goes for sanding and for putting the finish on, do you spend as much time on those areas as the obvious ones? I usually do, am I obsessive?

How well do you know your own style? - 26 replies

I think that all of us have had “throw together” projects. They aren’t built in a certain style, only made to fit a need at the time. These are not what I am asking about. Most of us here follow certain styles of woodworking. These are usually referred to by the most notable woodworkers performing them (or creating them). Fo...

Asking help on pricing these tools - 23 replies

Had a call from a lady that had heard about my fire. Her husband passed 5 years ago. His woodshop has been shut down for about 7 years. She offered to sell me anything out of there that I wanted. So I went to look. No real goldmine finds, but a few things that are alright to help get me running. Keep in mind that most of this is in the 10-15 yea...

Do you really remember everything in your shop? - 44 replies

Over the last couple weeks I have thought a lot about everything in the shop that was never on “the list”. We all keep track of major tools, stationary power tools, portable power tools, all of our commonly used hand tools, maybe a fancy workbench and so on. But how often do you think of things like ladders (I had 4 fiberglass ladder...

This is what my shop looked like last night And this is this morning It was a nice quiet afternoon yesterday so I decided to burn a scrap pile. Reactions to Greenheart? - 7 replies

I have worked with quite a few different types of wood over the years. Never really had any problems with any of them. Recently I had a chance to get a piece of Greenheart. First time I have ever been around it. Sawing or Sanding it caused me to instantly start coughing a lot. I now wear a mask to do anything with it. No skin reaction. Just curi...

Lumberjocks Consumer report section suggestion - 15 replies

I know that we have a review section for equipment. But would it be to difficult or possible to put it into an organized fashion like a consumer report? My thought is that we get LOTS of forum topics on which is the best type of equipment to buy. Maybe if we had a section that just simply dedicated to types of equipment then they could just loo...
