On an earlier blog I wanted an I’d on some wood the ranchers here referred to as “Ironwood”. A very plain wood that appears to be invasive and extremely hard.

We have a positive I’d now as Eastern Hophornbeam. Commonly called Ironwood. Slightly less hard than mesquite. Commonly used for tool handles & wooden mallet heads. Now I have to find something I can use it for.

Once dried it does take stain very well.

Any suggestions?

Glad you managed to ID the wood. Guess you will be turning quite a few tool handles with it.

I have seen a few beautiful laminated ironwood bowls and dishes made. It does turn really pleasantly because it is so hard and smooth.

It is also the only wood I have ever worked with that I am woefully allergic to! I hope you can handle it better than I. :)

Glad you got this IDd. As far as suggestions, you know I only know how to make boxes and tall folding chairs. So that would be my suggestion! ie If the only tool you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail! Still don’t have an ID on the “SD Balsa”?

I think Lie-Neilsen uses it as handles on their chisels…maybe sell it to them.
