Day Kind. Beautiful, original and comfortable. I really liked. Good luck and patience. I used for the handle bone ( knee cows ), if interested.

Hello, Very nice looking canes. Where do you get the silver and rubber tips or do you make them yourself?

Thank you for your kind comments. I'm a real "newbie" I'm afraid, still learning the basics of joinery and the local timbers. Teak, Suar, and Benkeria (or Benkirai) are all I really know on sight, and I still couldn't tell you how they are likely to behave!

Gee, I thought today felt like a special day! But, then every day feels special when you can wake up face up and breathing. Some days just take a little more java to start the engine than others.

I've enjoyed visiting and using this site for my cane business and my social outlet, as when one works from home in the basement, the social contact is limited. I have found the LJ community to be welcoming from the very start and the variety of knowledge and ideas are just amazing. I hope to be a part of this community for a very long time.

    Hi Todd,

Thanks for the note. I'm glad you found my instrucables. I have it connected to one of my canes here, and was hoping the link would suffice, but I guess I should take the time to upload it on LJ's as you suggest.

I would love to see what you create! If you have any Q's just contact me.

    Hi MMH,

I'd like to let you know I have viewed your work and to say the least it is simply amazing. I just wanted to let you know I have been viewing your work in hopes to get and idea of how to make a cane for my grandfather. In the process of searching the web I found only one set of instructions I felt gave me the best info and chance to complete a quality cane. I have been going thru the steps and just happend to notice today when reviewing the info I found on instructables.com that I noticed it referenced your lumberjocks info. I wanted to thank you for that info as hours of searching for how to make a quality cane that is the only quality instructions I came across and thought I would recommend if you have not yet posted that info on LJ's I think it would greatly benefit some members here that may be interested in attempting a walking cane.

    Keep up the great work,

    Todd

    Hi mmh,thanks for your comment.
If it weren't for the goggles my eye would fall out of my head (I only have the one good one, born with no optic nerve in the other which is beneficial when working on such a small scale)
Most of my work is starkly geometric but I have been known,on occasion, to make something a little more fluid..

mmh-Thanks for the boost for my BowlSaw. We are slowly getting this tool off the ground. Two new customers in England last week. Seems the overseas market is better than the locals. They aren't afraid to try something new. Send me a photo of what you made with the unit and I'll put it on my website. Dick

Here are some examples of my canes that I have done so far. I got interested in making them watching my husband make a few for himself and I researched the different styles of canes out there and most of them are not too cute, especially the aluminum ones. I have always loved using my hands and wanted to get involved in wood, as the basement is a wood workshop that my husband has been putting together for himself and used mainly to renovate our 1950's circa home. We conquered the kitchen and two baths ourselves, he did the wood work and I did the tile. I've run out of projects so now with his blessing and tutoring I'm taking over his woodshop. [He let me retire so I could do this full-time! After chores I run down to the basement.]

I am still creating new designs and have a basement full of exotic & domestic woods to choose from. I am currently working on a Manzanita root handle with Black Walnut shaft and another one of Pink Ivory handle with Purpleheart shaft. The combinations and designs are endless. I've yet to do much with the antler I bought, but hope to work with it soon. I need to figure out the best way (strength & aesthetics) to join wood/antler together.

My favorite wood that I've worked with so far is Black Walnut. The Claro walnut can sometimes be pretty hard but no where as hard as Afromosia or Snakewood. Maple with it's different figuring is fun too. My favorite cane so far is the Quilted Maple handle with Fiddleback shaft.
