Indian carving

I wanted to try spraying a finish on a carving. I tried it on this indian and my color came out to dark and shiny.
I didn’t want to turn this into a piece of firewood so I carved off all the finish except for the hair and tried it again this time by putting on several different stains and glazes. I think the second attempt came out better.

Cottonwood bark carving

This is a cottonwood bark carving that I just completed. Most of the carvings that I do are western figures so I have to be pay attention to a lot of little details. With this type of carving you just need to see something in the bark and start carving. You can make things up as you go along.

All 3 are done in basswood. Starting with a turned blank helps to keep the carving round and gets rid of a lot of the waste wood fast.

Family room remodel

In 1981 I built a family room onto my house. I put in a wood stove to heat the room. At the time I really enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood. However the older I got the less fun it was to cut, split and haul wood every weekend, so about 4 years ago I took out the stove and ran heat out into the room. The corner that held the stove just sat empty until a few months ago when I decided to redo the whole family room. A few things I wanted to do was to make all the window, door and chair rail molding and to rebuild the window seat with raised panels. For the corner that the wood stove sat I decided to make a fake raised panel fireplace. Here are the results.
